2 NC-based soldiers die in Afghanistan bombing

RALEIGH — Two North Carolina-based soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said Monday that Pfc. Alan H. Newton Jr. of Asheboro and Capt. Benjamin A. Sklaver of Medford, Mass., died Oct. 2 in Murcheh, Afghanistan.

The department says the soldiers were killed by a suicide bomber.

The 26-year-old Newton and 32-year-old Sklaver were assigned to the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion in Greensboro.

The department says the incident is under investigation.
