Pender County woman to sing national anthem at UNCW game

Before any sporting event, fans and players pause for the National Anthem. A pender county woman is preparing to entertain the crowd before Saturday’s Seahawk basketball game.

Pearl Pollak has been living in Pender County for the past 26 years. She has been singing since she was child, and was even accepted into Juilliard.

She has sung the national anthem countless times, but this time it’s for a younger crowd.

“I saw an ad in the paper and I answered it and the gentleman was lovely,” said Pearl. “I said, ‘Listen, I’ll level with you, I’m 82. I don’t think I look it, but I can sing’. He said, ‘Come on down’ and I sang for him and he said, ‘fine’. It was very nice.”

The game between UNC Wilmington and George Mason starts at 5:15pm. Pearl will sing a few minutes prior.
