2 species of rare bats found at NC Army post

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Fort Bragg officials have discovered the Army post is home to two species of rare bats.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Monday that Fort Bragg scientists are working to protect two populations of rare bats to keep them off the endangered species list.

Scientists first spotted roosting trees for Rafinesque’s big-eared bats and the southeastern myotis bats during summer and fall inventories.

Biologists have set up misting nets around Fort Bragg to catch the bats for banding and radio-tagging.
