Former athlete, news anchor, admits to addictions

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A North Carolina man who once earned the spotlight because of his talent on the basketball court and behind the microphone now admits that he is a drug addict caught in a spiral of self-destruction.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Jon Robinson wanted to tell his story because he doesn’t want to be a fraud anymore. He is a cocaine and heroin addict who describes himself as “skid row.”

The 49-year-old Robinson is jobless. With his home in foreclosure, he expects to move into a homeless shelter. Before his fall, Robinson was a high school basketball standout who played college ball at the University of Maryland. He was also a local morning radio host, a television news anchor and public address announcer for the Carolina Panthers from opening day.
