Pier reopens after jet ski crash that killed father, son

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The pier where a father and son died in a jet ski accident before Memorial Day weekend is now back open.

John Wernowsky, 51, and his son Jake, 10, died on the Friday of the holiday weekend after hitting the pier along the Intracoastal Waterway in Sunset Beach. They were visiting for the weekend with their family. The family is from Acworth, Gerogia.

The pier was damaged in the incident but has since been repaired.

“It was a tragic accident and as we move forward, we hope that everyone including both visitors and residents enjoy a safe summer,” said Mayor Ron Watts.
