Coal ash remediation nears completion at South Brunswick Middle

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – The South Brunswick Middle School ball field will soon see some action after more than three years of being vacant because coal ash was used to elevate the field years ago.

School officials said the field was closed after soil tests came back showing high levels of dangerous metals due to the coal ash.

A Brunswick County school spokeswoman said crews have completely removed the coal ash soil that was on the field and now they are putting in new dirt.

She said they expect the work to replace the dugout will begin August 1. And they are expecting students will be able to play ball by the first day of school on August 29.

Justin Garza, South Brunswick Middle School’s athletic director, said it’s not just a baseball and softball field, the school’s football and soccer teams also would play there.
