Civil War battle relived at Fort Fisher

Visitors to historic Fort Fisher this weekend got to experience history. The fort celebrated the second battle of Fort Fisher’s 145th anniversary.

In that battle, nearly ten thousand Union forces stormed the last coastal stronghold of the Confederacy and took control of the Cape Fear River.

The re-enactment stays true to history to make it as real as possible.

“I tell you something that happened to me today that’s never happened to me before,” said Russell Tribe. “The way the acoustics were, it sounded like minié balls going over my head, it had that whizzing sound. I’ve never been in a place where the acoustics were like that.”

More than four hundred re-enactors spent the weekend at the fort teaching the public about the history of the fort while they weren’t busy acting.

The Civil War continued for only four months after the fall of Fort Fisher.
