Wet roads, cold temps could be a problem Saturday night

Rain fell most of the day over Southeastern North Carolina. Now the mercury is falling. The result could be an icy night along the Cape Fear Coast.

Saturday afternoon New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon said he and his staff are monitoring the weather and are ready to respond to any problems tonight. He also warned folks to be careful if they have to be on the road.

“This type of weather is rare in New Hanover County,” McMahon said. “It’s important to be aware of the hazards that exist and be prepared.”

If you must travel, the Sheriff’s Office suggests the following precautions:

·Reduce your speed. Driving at the regular speed limit with reduce your ability to control the car if you begin to slide.

·Leave plenty of room between you and the other vehicles.

·Bridges and overpasses accumulate ice first. Approach them with extreme caution and do not apply your brakes while on the bridge.

·If you do begin to slide, take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide. Do not apply the brakes as that will cause further loss of control of the car.
