February is American Heart Month

Experts say every 25 seconds someone in America suffers a coronary event like a heart attack. That’s why February is American Heart Month. It’s an effort to spread awareness about the dangers of heart disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. It affects nearly 800,000 Americans every year.

Knowing the signs of a heart attack ahead of time, can help save your life. Signs include pain in the chest, arm, back, jaw, or neck, shortness of breath, breaking out in a cold sweat or nausea.

Risk factors can increase your chances of developing heart problems, including a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and tobacco use.

“If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, you should stop,” cardiologist David Weaver said. “It’s amazing how many people in this day in age still smoke, even though we clearly know the risks.”

New Hanover Regional Medical Center is one of 32 places in the world with an echocardiogram machine that uses ultrasound to pinpoint heart problems.

This Friday is national “Wear Red Day” to help support the fight against heart disease.
