Artifacts unearthed Burgwin-Wright House

History has been uncovered in Wilmington. Crews working on the Burgwin-Wright House found artifacts buried underneath.

A display case showcases animal bones, old wine bottles, oyster shells, part of a pipe and a comb made from bone.

Site manager Anthony Small helped unearth the artifacts when he was making repairs in the sub-basement. He thinks the artifacts are from the early 1700s.

“I appreciate the fact that somebody put so much effort into something we take for granted today,” he said. “A lot of things were built with tools that they had to build the tool. They had to make the tool to make the tool. It’s a beautiful thing where people actually used their minds to think and their hands to work.”

The artifacts are on display indefinitely. The Burgwin-Wright House is open for tours Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
