GlenCare owners won’t discuss investigation, allegations
New details in the investigation of an assisted living facility here in Wilmington that we’ve been following for the last month. Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services told owner Glen Kornegay the facility could no longer accept new patients and the state plans to revoke his license.
The state Division of Health Service Regulation and the New Hanover County Department of Social Services conducted a week-long complaint investigation last month. According to the report, GlenCare failed to investigate the cause of bruises and potential abuse of patients and did not document missing drugs.
Some of the most serious findings of the report include a staff member who took a resident into a bathroom behind closed doors and “was heard to say ‘If you’re going to act like a baby, I’m going to slap you.’ Interview revealed a noise was heard that could have been a slap.”
The investigation also revealed inconsistencies in the documentation of residents’ weight. With one resident, GlenCare’s records were more than 40 pounds off from the records of the resident’s personal doctor. That doctor had instructed GlenCare’s staff to keep a close watch on the resident’s weight.
GlenCare has ten days to respond to the report and show it is in compliance. After the ten days are up, Barbara Ryan, chief of the Adult Care Licensure Section of the Division of Health Service Regulation, will decide whether to revoke the license, give GlenCare more time or allow GlenCare to keep its license.
We tried to talk to owners Glen and Anne Kornegay about the investigation. They refused to talk to us and asked us to leave their facility.
