Superintendent of NC’s largest system resigns
RALEIGH, N.C. — The superintendent of North Carolina’s largest school system says he is resigning at the end of the school year, a surprise announcement that shocked school board members.
A statement from the Wake County Public Schools System said Del Burns submitted his resignation during Monday’s board of education meeting. The resignation is effective on June 30. Burns became superintendent in 2006.
In his statement to the board, Burns said that it was clear that he couldn’t, in all good conscience, continue to serve as superintendent. He didn’t elaborate on the reason for his departure.
School board chairman Ron Margiotta said he would try to convince Burns to change his mind.
Burns leaves behind a new school board majority which campaigned on scrapping a diversity policy in favor of neighborhood schools.
