Former sub commander visits students
Nearly two years ago Wilmington hosted the commissioning of the USS North Carolina submarine. Mark Davis was the Commanding Officer of the North Carolina that day. And while he no longer sails on the sub, Davis has kept in touch with folks here in Wilmington.
Today he returned to the Port City to speak to a group of fifth graders at Eaton Elementary School. He and the kids chatted about his recent trip to Djibouti, Africa.
This is the second year Davis has visited children at their school. He says being able to talk to the students means a lot to him.
“First of all they made me feel like what I was doing was important,” Davis said. “Also it gave me something to do and something to think about, and, you know, it gave me a connection to home and to Wilmington, and so it meant a great deal to me.”
Davis leaves for Naples, Italy, in July. He’ll be there for two years.
