Mold forces changes at New Hanover County school

Mold forced students out of their normal classrooms at a New Hanover County elementary school. An environmental test at Wrightsboro Elementary School found mold in six of 12 classrooms tested.

School administrators say about a month ago they started receiving complaints about mold, ranging from odor to sore throats. Mold was found in two different buildings, which house kindergarten and first grade classes.

The School Board expects the clean-up to take about eight weeks. During that time Wrightsboro’s first grade classes will be moved to different buildings on the campus. Kindergarten classes will be held at Castle Hayne Elementary.

“The parents should be assured that we’re doing everything to make sure students are safe, and the staff is safe,” said school district spokesperson Valita Quattlebaum. “That’s why we took immediate action today to shut those buildings down.”

The school will host an informational session for parents Monday night at 6:30.
