Candidate filing period ends

Let the political season begin. The filing period ended today for this year’s elections across North Carolina.

It will be a crowded race for US Senate. Seven Democrats will run in May’s primary for Richard Burr’s seat. The incumbent will have a primary challenge of his own from three fellow Republicans.

Former UNCW chancellor Jim Leutze will advance to November’s general election as the only Democrat running for the 9th District state Senate seat Julia Boseman is leaving. Wilmington attorneys Thom Goolsby and Michael Lee will face off in the Republican primary.

Former state Representative David Redwine is the lone Democrat seeking the 8th District Senate seat R.C. Soles has held for decades. Bettie Fennell and Bill Rabon are seeking the Republican nomination.

We told you earlier this week about the Republican race for Brunswick County between two former Democrats: State Trooper Timothy Daniels and incumbent John Ingram. Current Democrats will have a vote as Louis Lewis and Elizabeth (Rendy) Lewis will meet in the Democratic primary.

Some other notable filings Pender County Commission chair Jimmy Tate is the only Democrat running for Clerk of Superior Court. He will take on Republican Robert Kilroy in November.

Ben David is unopposed as District Attorney in New Hanover and Pender Counties.

And the last of the 11 candidates for New Hanover County Commission to file: former Sheriff Sid Causey.
