Coming up at Wilmington City Council Tuesday
Items of interest on the agenda include:
* An ordinance to accept a $2,000 donation from a group of downtown restaurant and bar owners to be split equally to buy additional cigarette disposal containers for the downtown area and to support the WPD’s Mounted Patrol Unit. The additional cigarette disposal containers are in response to an increase in cigarette butt littering downtown after a new state law went into effect in January that prohibits smoking in most bars and restaurants. The city has launched an educational outreach and enforcement program to teach downtown merchants about the new law. Existing city ordinances require businesses to keep public spaces such as sidewalks free of litter, but now that the new law has gone into effect, many smokers go outside to smoke and throw their cigarette butts on the sidewalk.
* A public hearing and ordinance establishing a 90-day moratorium on cyber-sweepstakes gaming within the city while city staff review land use regulations and what affect the new businesses are having.
* An ordinance to accept almost $1 million from the state for repaving almost one mile of Third Street. The repaving would take place as part of the $5 million streetscape enhancement project approved as part of the 2006 transportation bond; the project is slated to start this summer.
