Woman in New Jersey alerts Wilmington Cops to robbery
Time: 10:17 p.m. – Sunday night
Location: 1200 block S. 13th Street
Offense: Armed Robbery
Summary: A woman called the 911 center from New Jersey to report that she had been talking to her son on the telephone. He was parked near his business in the 1200 block S. 13th Street. Suddenly it sounded as though he was being robbed and the phone disconnected. Officers responded but found no victim in the area.
The victim, age 63, later called in and met up with officers. He confirmed that he had been on the phone with his mother when three male juveniles approached his vehicle on bicycles. One approached the driver’s door while another went to the passenger side door. They opened both doors and demanded money.
One of them was holding an object close to his body in a manner that led the victim to believe it was a firearm. The victim pretended to reach down, as if to get his money, and shifted his car into reverse. He took off in reverse and returned to his home in Leland.
At some time during the confrontation, one of the robbers reached into the center console and stole the victim’s cell phone. He also dropped the object he’d been holding, which turned out to be a large felt-tip marker. All three suspects are described as young black males, 12 – 16 years of age. The case is under investigation.
