Sanders Road and River Road intersection to close Monday

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Sanders Road will be closed at the intersection with River Road for a month starting  at 9 a.m. Monday, August 29.

The closure is to complete work on the roundabout at the intersection. River Road will remain open during construction, but Sanders Road will not open until September 29.

The DOT says they had hoped to complete the project before school started since the closure of Sanders Road is between it’s intersection with River Road and Bellamy Elementary School. The project was delayed because of utility issues and work is too far along to delay finishing the project until next summer.

The expectation is that the roundabout will reduce traffic and also improve safety by significantly reducing the chances of head on collisions and T-bone accidents seen at more traditional intersections.

There will be a signed detoured in the area directing drivers from River Road to Cathay Road, Carolina Beach Road, and Sanders Road. Drivers are told to use caution while in the area and to expect delays. Look out for construction and detour signs, and obey the speed limit.
