Stranded fishermen stuck in mud up to their armpits; rescued
Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Water Rescue Airboat assisted Oak Island Water Rescue and the US Coast Guard on Saturday night.
Oak Island’s 911 Center received a call at approximately 10:00 pm on April 10th from a woman that was stranded in the marsh between Oak Island and the Intracoastal Waterway. The US Coast Guard and Oak Island Water Rescue were first dispatched to the location, found the subjects, but were unable to get to their exact position in the thick marsh.
Captain Charlie Wilson was dispatched to the scene at 11:05 pm with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office airboat. Wilson arrived at approximately midnight and found the victims had sunk in the mud up to their underarms. Wilson was able to get to the victims without difficulty in the airboat and lift them out of the mud and onto the boat.
The victims advised Captain Wilson that they had been fishing on an inflatable raft when the raft deflated and left them stranded in the marsh. The victims suffered no injuries.
