Wilmington opens state’s first bike boulevard Saturday

The city will officially open the state’s first bicycle boulevard on Saturday. There will be a grand opening for the Ann Street Bicycle Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Ann Street between 9th and 10th streets.

Mayor Bill Saffo and other local dignitaries will be on hand. The public is invited to attend the event, which will include music, games, bicycle safety educational activities. Bicycles, helmets and locks will also be given away.

A bicycle boulevard is a roadway with features that make it more bicycle-friendly and safe. In contrast to most roadways, bicycle boulevards give priority to cyclists in some areas instead of cars. They are designed to encourage bike usage as an alternative to gas-burning cars.
