Wilmington area’s jobless rates tumbled in July
WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — Jobless rates in Southeastern N.C. tumbled in July, following the national and statewide trends, according to statistics released Wednesday by the N.C. Department of Commerce.
The unemployment rates for Wilmington and its three-county area showed significant decreases from both the June and July 2015 numbers.
The rate for the Wilmington area was 4.6 percent in July, down from 4.8 percent in June and 5.9 percent in July 2015. Most economists prefer comparing the year-over-year employment numbers as a better barometer of a region’s economic health because monthly figures are not adjusted for seasonal variations, such as students looking for summer jobs or hiring spikes for the pre-Christmas shopping rush.
