UNCW fires women’s basketball coach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Less than a week after hiring a men’s basketball coach after a 79-day search, UNCW is now looking for a women’s basketball coach. Athletic director Kelly Mehrtens announced in a news release Wednesday evening that Ann Hancock’s contract will not be renewed for the 2010-11 season.

Hancock’s contract expires on May 31, 2010. A national search for her replacement will begin immediately.

“We appreciate Ann’s hard work and dedication to UNCW during her time here,” Mehrtens said in the release. “We wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.”

Hancock, who took over the program in 2000-01, just finished her 10th season at UNCW and coached the Seahawks to a 12-19 overall record and a 6-12 conference mark. In 10 seasons, Hancock compiled a 138-156 overall record and a 72-91 ledger in the CAA.

Friday UNCW ended a lengthy search for a men’s basketball coach by hiring Buzz Peterson away from Appalachian State. Peterson replaces Benny Moss, who was reassigned in the athletic department in January.
