ONLY ON 3: Jailer to appeal inmate death case to Supreme Court
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Attorneys representing a New Hanover County Sheriff’s Deputy involved in an inmate’s death are appealing their case to the US Supreme Court.
Back in 2003, Gary Rummer was serving six days behind bars for failing to complete community service after a DWI conviction. Rummer suffered a broken neck and massive head injuries, as a jailer handcuffed him in his cell. He later died in the hospital.
A federal appeals court said Rummer’s estate can sue on the grounds that he received inadequate medical attention after his injuries. Attorneys representing the jailer say they are appealing that decision to the US Supreme Court.
