South Brunswick High School and Progress Energy to unveil unique solar panels

The new demonstration PV system, valued at more than $20,000, was installed as part of a partnership between Progress Energy Carolinas and the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ’N Community Foundation, a program of the National Hockey League team based in Raleigh. The SunSense schools program is a hands-on educational program for middle school and high school students that encourages them to develop innovative energy solutions.

South Brunswick High School is one of five winning schools across the Carolinas that received PV arrays and educational materials to help teachers integrate renewable energy learning opportunities into the classroom. It is the only school to win in Eastern N.C.

The 2-kilowatt solar PV system is connected to an aerator at the school’s Moses Lewis Aquaculture Facility and to Internet-based monitoring equipment, so students can study the panels’ real-time electricity production.
