FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: What’s next for Petrolino; where’s MADD?
The story of a 19-year-old who police say crashed her car at Wrightsville Beach after huffing dust cleaner and drinking has been one of the hottest stories ever on our website.
Wrightsville Beach Police say Randi Petrolino passed out early Tuesday while crossing the causeway bridge. They say she’d been drinking and huffing and lost control of the car doing 70 in a 45. She ended up hitting a flower bed which launched the car 65 feet and into a tree. The accident fractured her back and punctured her spleen. Her two passengers weren’t hurt.
Today, we asked Wrightsville Beach Police what’s next for Petrolino and could they guarantee she wouldn’t get behind the wheel again once she’s released from the hospital. They told us she’s already been charged, arrested and posted her $10,000 bond. So until her court date in July, they have no control over what she does once she gets out of the hospital. They did say however that District Attorney Ben David’s office could request the magistrate up her bond amount and that **could** send her to jail. But the D.A. won’t talk with us about this case because he says it’s still pending.
Some of you may also be asking where’s Mothers Against Drunk Driving in all this? Because so far they haven’t said a word. Well… we’ve learned that Stacey Manning is the volunteer heading up MADD’s Wilmington chapter. State MADD Director Craig Lloyd says she’s too new and too nervous to address this incident, but if we give her 90 days – she’ll be ready to talk about it then. Here’s hoping for a quiet three months.
