Pfizer plans to shed 400 jobs at NC vaccine plant

SANFORD, N.C. — Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Global Manufacturing plans to cut 400 jobs from one of its plants in North Carolina by 2015.

The company announced Tuesday a restructuring plan that will shed about 6,000 positions from its global work force and see some plants close entirely.

The cuts at the vaccine plant in Sanford will remove nearly half the current work force of about 850. Pfizer’s operations in Durham and Laurinburg, which together employ about 235, won’t be affected.

The Sanford plant opened in 1987. It manufactures a range of vaccines. In a statement, Pfizer said Sanford is still an important part of its supply network.
