Three caught casing for empty homes
WPD officers responded Thursday morning to a report of suspicious activity. Before the morning was over, they had recovered a stolen car, seized two weapons and arrested three people.
The call came in a few minutes after 8:00 a.m. The caller reported that several men were knocking on doors in the area of 23rd Street and Keaton Avenue. If anyone answered the door, they were saying their car was broken down. But the reporting party believed the men actually were casing houses to find out who was home.
When two WPD officers arrived at the scene, they ran the tag of a green Ford Excursion parked nearby and found out it was stolen. When the officers approached several men standing near the car, three of them began walking away. One officer followed them, engaging them in conversation, while the other officer stayed near the stolen car with a fourth suspect.
When the three suspects kept walking, the officer drew his weapon and ordered them to the ground. All three complied. Meanwhile, the man being detained by the other officer began to struggle. Before the suspect was subdued and taken into custody, both the officer and the suspect had sustained minor injuries.
One of the men being detained was identified by an independent witness as a “good Samaritan” who had been flagged down by the other three. He subsequently was released. The other three men were confirmed to be convicted felons. After being questioned by investigators, all three were transported to the New Hanover County Detention Facility.
All three suspects are in custody at the New Hanover County Detention Facility. Most charges listed here resulted directly from today’s incident. Certain lesser charges may have resulted from outstanding warrants.
