Scouts get National Cemetery ready for Memorial Day

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts woke up bright and early this weekend to decorate over five thousand head stones to get them ready for Memorial Day. One American flag was planted on each soldier’s gravesite at Wilmington National Cemetery on Market Street.

The scouts worked together and had the entire cemetery covered in flags in a little more than one hour Saturday morning. The flags will be present through Memorial Day as families visit to pay tribute to their loved ones.

“We’re giving them an opportunity to serve those who sacrificed and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” said James Fredley, cubmaster for pack 225.

“We are honoring the soldiers who fought for our country, fought for freedom,” said scout Ramon Serrano. “We probably wouldn’t be standing on this grass right now if it wasn’t for them.”

The public is invited to attend a ceremony at Wilmington National Cemetery Monday morning at 11. The names of more than 500 veterans will be read who have died since last Memorial Day.
