“No Port Southport” celebrates Board of Aldermen vote
SOUTHPORT, NC – The grassroots organization No Port Southport, NC, Inc., welcomes the news of Southport, NC Aldermen voting 4-1 on a resolution opposing the “construction and operation of the N.C. International Terminal in Southport.”
This vote taken on June 10, 2010 tracks the evolution of Southport’s growing concern and awareness of the proposed megaport’s massive impact to the region’s environment and the real cost to all of the taxpayers. Also cited was the total lack of engagement by the Port Authority to communicate with the elected officials or the citizens of Southport.
Over four years ago the Southport Aldermen voted to support the proposed port. Six months ago the Aldermen voted to put the town’s position in neutral. Thursday night the Aldermen voted to reject the megaport in its entirety.
No Port Southport NC, Inc. seeks to provide factual analysis and data on all aspects of the proposed megaport including economic, environmental, security and health issues. For up-to-date information please log on to: www.noportsouthport.org.
