UNCW honors veterans across campus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW is spreading school spirit in a different way this week, instead of seeing teal everywhere, the campus is a bit more patriotic than usual.

Several students and staff placed 1,700 flags across campus honoring veterans in honor of veterans day. Each flag stands for each military affiliated student, faculty, or staff member active or non active.

Not only are the flags honoring those who protect and serve our country, but their loved ones as well.

“A lot of times we think of those who have served as just a person,” Director of Military Affairs, Bill Kawczynski said. “A male of female who was actually in the military. But we also include the spouse or family members, dependents because they’re serving right along next to the service member and go through a lot of pain and hardship and everything else.”

Aside from the flags spread across campus, UNCW has a flag of significance each day leading up to Veterans Day.

Mondays flag represents the father of Environmental Studies professor, Jack Hall. Hall’s father was a World War II veteran who passed away when professor hall was eight-years-old.
