WILMINGTON, NC – The first Tuesday in August traditionally marks the nationwide observance of National Night Out, “America’s National Night Out Against Crime.” This year, the Wilmington Police Department is partnering with two local neighborhoods that have organized celebrations for their residents.

Today’s first event is at the Village at Greenfield Apartments from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. Resident manager Tina Heyer has worked for at least three months to organize a community-wide celebration. She has invited residents of nearby apartment complexes to join in.

Several blocks of Martin Street will be blocked off for the event, and a stage is being set up in the 1200 block Martin Street (tentative location).

Wilmington Police and Fire Departments will have displays in the 1100 block of Greenfield Street. WPD will be represented by K-9 and Mounted units and Officer Friendly, as well as several marked vehicles and the Text-A-Tip van.

Police Chief Ralph Evangelous is scheduled to appear at the Village at Greenfield celebration at approximately 3:30 pm.

The second celebration of National Night Out is at Market North Apartments, 111 Darlington Avenue. This will be a more low-key event, but it marks a new level of awareness for a neighborhood in transition. The Market North event is scheduled for approximately 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening.
