WFD and CFPUA want you to keep fire hydrants clear

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Now that Hurricane Matthew debris is gone, the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority and Wilmington Fire Department are asking people to keep fire hydrants clear of debris and greenery.

According to a news release, firefighters have found several locations where either debris or landscaping was in front of the fire hydrants, making them difficult to find and use. In some cases, the hydrants were completely blocked from view.

Firefighters say barriers created by debris and vegetation are obstacles that can cost time, especially at night. All fire hydrants should have a three-foot circle cleared around them to ensure they are easy to access to fight fire.
