One person injured in Wilmington apartment fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department responded to an apartment fire just after 6:30 A.M. this morning.

According to a WFD spokesperson the fire was in a third floor apartment at 1402 Hospital Plaza Drive. The fire was detected and put out by the sprinkler system, alerting the fire department. WFD personnel shut down the system to prevent more water damage from happening.

The tenant was taking to New Hanover County Regional Medical Center ER with injuries from the fire. Officials have determined the fire started from improperly discarded smoking material.

No other injuries were reported, the damage is estimated to be around $25,000.
