Trial set for couple accused of locking up autistic son in New Hanover Co.
WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline) — A trial is scheduled to begin Monday for Heidi and Robert Winkler, a New Hanover County couple accused of keeping their then-15-year-old autistic son locked in a bedroom for an extended period of time.
Five things to know about the case:
- According to New Hanover County birth records, the Winklers are the parents of two sons, one born in 1999 and one in 2001.
- Heidi Winkler, 57, was arrested Dec. 11, 2014, at the family home on Richelieu Drive after social workers with the New Hanover County Department of Social Services called law enforcement. Her husband Robert Winkler, 58, was arrested the following day at the New Hanover County Courthouse.
