NC justices hearing arguments in same-sex adoption
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina’s highest court is hearing
arguments involving an adoption that some attorneys say could lead
to a decision whether same-sex couples can legally adopt in the
state.
The state Supreme Court scheduled a hearing Wednesday on
lawsuits involving current state Sen. Julia Boseman of Wilmington
and her former domestic partner.
Melissa Jarrell gave birth to a son in 2002 while together with
Boseman. Three years later they agreed Boseman would become a
second legal parent. They broke up, and Jarrell has wanted to void
the adoption because she argues the state doesn’t allow same-sex
adoptions in which one partner is the biological parent.
Attorneys outside the case have filed briefs either supporting
the adoption or arguing it and others in the state are invalid.
