Body of Hickory man laid to rest in Atlantic floats to surface

PORT EVERGLADES, Fla. (WSOC-TV, CHARLOTTE) – The body of a North Carolina man who was laid to rest in the Atlantic Ocean floated to the surface off the coast of south Florida.

Daniel Lasky, 48, of Hickory died Sept. 8 of Lou Gehrig’s disease. According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, his family wrapped his body, placed it on dry ice, loaded in into their van and traveled to Florida for a burial at sea.

Detectives said the family arrived in Fort Lauderdale, boarded a boat with the body and completed the ocean burial. They then went fishing in Lasky’s honor, as he was an avid fisherman, detectives said.

The next day, a local fisherman called the sheriff’s department after spotting the body floating in the water. Homicide and crime scene detectives began investigating and learned that Lasky’s family had planned to bury him at sea. His obituary, printed by Channel 9’s newspaper partner, the Hickory Daily Record, announces that burial would be at sea. Copyright 2010 by WSOCTV.com. All rights reserved.
