New Hanover Schools cuts ribbon on Snipes Academy

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Lights, camera, action. New Hanover County Schools opened the Snipes Academy of Arts and Design today.

Students showed off some of the performance skills they’ll use in the classroom. The environmentally-friendly school is a new facility that will integrate the arts into the regular curriculum.

“What we do is integrate arts, music, dance and drama into our core subject learning to enhance our program and to give our students opportunities they normally would not have in a school that wasn’t a magnet program,” principal Laura Jennings said.

The school is named after Annie Herring Snipes. She was the school’s first principal when it opened in 1943.
