FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: DA gathering information on Navassa forgery claims

NAVASSA, NC (WWAY) — We have an update tonight on a story you saw FIRST ON 3 last night about the Navassa mayor being stripped of his powers by the Town Council.

Some private property owners in Navassa say their signatures were forged on a deed to grant the town access to their property for water and sewer improvements. Because Mayor Eulis Willis was in charge of that project, he is under a cloud of suspicion.

We spoke with District Attorney Rex Gore today about the issue. He said he has not called for a formal investigation yet, because he is still gathering information. If a criminal investigation is launched, those involved could face felony forgery charges.
