Leland police chief discusses officer-involved shooting
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — On Wednesday, Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David announced Officer Jacob Schwenk’s actions were justified. Since the incident, Leland Police Chief Mike James says there has been support pouring in from across the country.
James responded to press inquiries on Thursday after one of his officers was cleared in a fatal shooting.
“He has gotten emails, cards, telephone calls from people all over the country. I mean, it’s just been unbelievable,” he said.
Chief James says the support comes at a time when officers need it the most.
“To be a Chief of Police in a town where you’ve been affected by this, it gives you a different perspective,” he said.
Chief James says this is the first time he has been in charge during an incident like the one that happened on December 9th. Officer Schwenk was shot six times after responding to a drunk driving call.
Schwenk managed to shoot and kill the suspect, Brent Quinn. But he, too, nearly died.
Fellow officer Charles McGee was one of the first officers to respond. He found Schwenk on the ground bleeding from a major artery. With guidance from Schwenk, McGee was able to apply a tourniquet.
“Officer McGee probably saved Officer Schwenk’s life,” Chief James said.
It was a night that deeply affected the department, and the town.
“It was tough for us. But having the support of the community and the way they rallied around us really helped that morale,” James said.
Chief James says Schwenk is in good spirits despite the long recovery ahead of him.
“Jake is a great officer. We’re hoping and praying he’s able to come back soon. You know, I think he’s ready to come back too. I think he’s getting a little stir crazy,” Chief James said.
Ready to return to protect and serve–a job Schwenk has proven he can do.
Chief James says worker’s compensation is covering his salary until he is able to get back on his feet.
The town will be covering his medical bills and anything else he needs.
