Judge says hearing scheduled in Easley probe

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A judge says a hearing is planned in the investigation of former North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley.

Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens said Monday that there will be a hearing in Wake County on Tuesday. Rowan County District Attorney Bill Kenerly has been reviewing whether Easley or others broke campaign finance laws.

Kenerly received the case last Oct. 30, when the State Board of Elections fined Easley’s campaign committee $100,000. The board determined there was enough evidence to show the committee failed to report dozens of flights that ex-political ally McQueen Campbell said he flew for Easley between 1999 and 2004.

Kenerly and an attorney for Easley did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
