Snow, ice and cold close schools in NC mountains

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) — Schools in at least eight North Carolina counties are closed as snow and a cold front move into the mountains. The snow wasn’t extremely heavy Monday, but officials said temperatures well below freezing meant dangerous ice was forming on roads.

Schools were closed in Avery, Buncombe, Graham, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Swain and Yancey counties.

The National Weather Service says six inches of snow fell on Mount Mitchell and one to three inches was reported in Asheville. Another round of snow is possible Monday afternoon and evening.

Low temperatures in many places across the state are expected to be in the teens later this week.
