NC lawmakers get grim news on school cut options

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina lawmakers facing hard budget decisions for a third year in a row have received potential spending cuts that include eliminating thousands of jobs, creating larger classes and offering fewer courses.
Administrators for the public schools, community colleges and university system on Tuesday presented to a General Assembly oversight committee what spending cuts of 5 percent or 10 percent would look like.
Gov. Bev Perdue asked for those options as she assembles her budget for the next two years. Next year’s budget gap could exceed $3 billion because there will be no federal stimulus money and probably no additional tax revenues.
Jeff Davies with the University of North Carolina system says cuts of this magnitude undoubtedly would harm academics.
