NC state workers offer $10B-plus in savings ideas
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Ending special corporate tax breaks, consolidating health services and allowing four-day workweeks are among ideas the union representing North Carolina state employees says could close next year’s budget gap without layoffs.
The State Employees Association of North Carolina released a report Tuesday at a news conference in front of the Legislative Building that it says contains more than $10 billion in savings. The report comes after association leaders asked their 55,000 members to come up with proposals to narrow a gap now projected at
$2.4 billion.
The report says the biggest savings would come from requiring nonprofit hospitals to give up a portion of their capital reserves.
Gov. Bev Perdue’s budget proposal is expected later this week.
