UNCW Sports Update:

Reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Year Charles Jenkins led three players in double figures with 22 points to power Hofstra past UNCW, 71-64, on Wednesday night in the regular season home finale for the Seahawks at Trask Coliseum.

The Pride won their seventh straight over the Seahawks and improved to 19-10 overall and 13-4 in the CAA. The Seahawks fell to 13-16 and 7-10.

UNCW senior playmaker Chad Tomko finished with 21 points and completed a double-double with 13 rebounds. Joining Tomko, who also doled out seven assists, in double-digit scoring was sophomore forward Keith Rendleman with 20 and senior guard Daryl Felder added a season-high 13 points.

David Imes also fashioned a double-double for the Pride with 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive boards.

After battling to a 30-all draw at intermission, Hofstra took control early in the second half as the Seahawks started slowly. A jumper on the left elbow by Greg Washington and a pair of free throws by Imes around the 18-minute mark gave the Pride a 36-32 advantage.

While the Seahawks were trying to chip away, the Pride increased the margin to eight points midway through the final period. Mike Moore, who finished with 20 points of his own, drained a long three-ball on the right side and a trifecta from the top of the key by Jenkins increased the margin to 55-47 with 9:15 remaining.

But UNCW, led by Tomko, made a furious comeback with a 7-0 run. Tomko banked in a three-pointer, converted a layup and fed Rendleman for a layup to slice the lead to 55-54 at 6:50. UNCW finally caught up with the Pride, 56-all, on a bucket by Rendleman in the paint at 4:13.

With the game tied at 59-all, Imes converted a bucket in the paint with just over three minutes left and Moore knocked down a triple on the right wing at 1:47 to extend the margin to 64-59.

Fittingly, Tomko, a four-year starter playing his final home game, got the Seahawks started off on the right foot on “Senior Night” with an unusual four-point play by making an off-balance triple, getting fouled and converting the free throw. Hofstra answered, however, to grab the lead briefly with a 7-0 run before Felder swished a trey in front of the Pride bench.

No more than five points separated the two teams the remainder of the first period as Tomko and Jenkins staged a shooting exhibition. Tomko and Jenkins each scored 14 points in the opening 20 minutes and Tomko pulled down seven rebounds as the Seahawks built a 21-17 edge on the glass.

UNCW’s six-point spurt to open the contest was the biggest lead for either team in the first half. Tomko’s third trifecta of the half gave the Seahawks a 28-24 edge at 4:20, but the Pride scored six of the last eight points of the period to pull even at halftime.

The Seahawks wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against Northeastern at Matthews Arena in Boston. The Pride, meanwhile, returns to the Mack Sports Complex to entertain Delaware at 2 p.m.
