Goolsby wants US 17 renamed to honor Marines at cost of $100k

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Sen. Thom Goolsby (R-9th District) has sponsored a bill in the state Senate to designate US 17 as US Marine Corps Highway. The bill calls for $100,000 of Department of Transportation funds be allocated to pay for signage for the road.

The bill calls for the entire highway, which hugs the coast from the Virginia state line to the South Carolina state line and passes through Camp Lejeune, receive the name.

Goolsby, a Marine Corps veteran who represents New Hanover County, is sponsoring the bill with fellow Republican senators Harry Brown, who represents Onlsow and Jones counties, and Jean Preston, who serves Carteret, Craven and Pamlico counties.
