“Fiery object” seen in sky by many across Southeastern North Carolina

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A “fiery object” streaking across the sky was reported by dozens in our viewers, and many more across the Carolinas Tuesday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, this object raced through the sky around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and lasted only a matter of 5 to 10 seconds before dissipating.

It is difficult to get an official confirmation without any photo or video evidence, but the most likely explanation is that this was a meteor burning up as it was passing through the atmosphere overhead. It is not known if this object reached ground.

Meteors are simply pieces of matter that enter the Earth’s atmosphere from outer space. They can range from the size of a boulder, to simply a piece of sand. They are frequently seen and well documented across the globe. Often, meteors will have the appearance of an extremely bright “fireball” and typically last only a few seconds.

If we hear more we’ll be sure to pass it along. And if you saw it, feel free to leave a comment explaining what it looked like to you.

We’re particularly interested in seeing what it actually looked like, so if you have a photo or video, please send it to newsroom@wwaytv3.com.
