Firefighter honored by Bladen County and fire departments throughout North Carolina
BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — About 25 different fire departments from throughout North Carolina responded to David Hunsinger Jr.’s last call Sunday. Hunsinger was a firefighter at the Tar Heel Fire Department in Bladen County. Some traveled hours to honor a man they didn’t even know, but to them, he was a brother.
“That’s what firemen do,” says Roger Dawson, a firefighter from Gray’s Creek Fire Department. “They are always there for each other.”
“They’re going to do anything for you and you’ll do anything for them,” says Jeremiah Harrison, from Leland Fire Rescue.
Hunsinger died Thursday in the line of duty. He was driving to the Tar Heel Fire Department to respond to a call, when he drove off the road, overcorrected and hit another car.
“He gave his life responding to a call, knowing he wasn’t going to get paid, but responded anyways to help the community, his neighbor, and his friends,” says Harrison.
Hunsinger leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
Hunsinger’s father, David Hunsinger Sr. is the Fire Chief at the Tar Heel Fire Department.
