Currituck Co. may limit visits to wild horse herds
CAMDEN, NC (AP) — Complaints against tour operators in Currituck County may lead to tighter regulations on visitor access to the wild horses of Corolla on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reports 38 complaints were lodged last year against guides taking visitors to see the horses that have survived on the Outer Banks for nearly 500 years.
Karen McCalpin of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund says the biggest problem is keeping tourists and vehicles 50 feet away from the horses.
Eight permits have been issued to tour operators for 2011. The commission’s proposal probably would result in fewer permits next year.
The action comes as Congress considers the Corolla Wild Horse Protection Act that would expand the herd from 60 to 100 horses on the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
