NC House changes would test 3 coastal jetties
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A 25-year North Carolina ban on concrete or
other walls to block wave action is being tested.
The state House plans a vote Wednesday on legislation that would
let the Coastal Resources Commission to test the effectiveness of
coastal jetties to slow the erosion on islands along inlets.
The legislation would allow up to three test cases, no more than
two of which would use public funds.
Supporters say the measure would protect inlets and development
from encroaching surf. Environmentalists say jetties don’t work and
will cost millions of dollars.
The version which had already passed the Senate placed no limits
on the number of projects.
