Back-burn to protect Stumpy Point from NC wildfire

MANTEO, NC (AP) — Firefighters are preparing to set a backfire
near Stumpy Point Bay to help contain a wildfire burning along the
North Carolina coast in Dare County.

State forestry officials said Tuesday the fire will be
strategically set to burn against the wildfire to try to halt its
advance toward the village of Stumpy Point.

The wildfire has burned about 21,000 acres, including thousands
of acres of peat bog.

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge spokeswoman Bonnie
Strawser says smoke from the wildfire has prompted state
air-quality officials to urge anyone with breathing problems to
remain indoors with the windows closed or to leave the area.

Helicopters also will be dropping water throughout the day in
areas that continue to burn.

The cause of the fire discovered last Thursday has not been
determined.
